Juno, The Scarlet Letter, and Easy A...What do they all have in common?
Okay, I don't think I am the first one, but I think I will be the most descriptive here. Why? Because my english teacher let us watch Juno, read The Scarlet Letter, and the best one yet: Go see Easy A while in school. Gosh. Our school is the best. Now, I have to make these comparisons deep and too the point, which can get a little funky if you have not read it yet. Okay, so let's give a brief summary of each movie and book shall we?
The Scarlet Letter
This book is about a women named Hester Prynne who just happened to have a baby out of wedlock. The town found out about it and shunned her. Who is the babies daddy you ask? Oh. Will get to that. They wanted to sentence her to death, but instead to marked with the unholy "A" for adultery, she goes around town in shame with her daughter. Later we find out the she had a husband (who she really didn't love) and he wants to seek out his revenge to whoever that baby father is (almost there). We meet the minister, who is sweet and actually talks to Hester, yet he is become very ill throughout the book, so Hester's ex-husband tends to his need, because he just happens to be a doctor and everything else smart. Later on, we find out that Hester has been keeping the secret that...wait for it...Minister Arthur Dimmesdale, is in fact the babies father, causing him to go in more pain. When the secret got out and Hester and Dimmesdale got there moment to find out they had true love, they wanted to run away together, the minister was trying to tell everyone that the spawn of Hester Prynne was his. Chillingworth went even more crazy, Dimmesdale dies in front of everyone, exposing what we saw as a scarlet "A" on his bosom. Chillingworth dies, cause he was useless. Hester's daughter moves away and gets married and lives the good life. While Hester remains in the Puritan town consulting women of there problems. Still wearing that A. Whew. Was that a doozy.
Juno- (This one will be short)
Juno is a teenage girl, who just happens to get knocked up by her somewhat boyfriend. She becomes pregnant and instead of abortion she wants to take it full term, knowing that she is "ill-equipped" to take care of her baby, she decides to give it up for adoption. She meets that family, the women, Vanessa, practically perfect, probably just a spilt end or two. The man, Mark, a little too hip for his age, thinks he is younger than he is. She is willing to give up the baby. Her life continues on, however, she knows people are talking behind her back. Her babies father, Pauly Bleaker, he finds out she pregnant, tries to care. But fails. Horribly. They fight, Mark tries to woo Juno, who only saw him as a friend. Vanessa and Mark get a divorce, but Juno still wants Vanessa to have the baby, cause she looks like a good mother. Juno and Pauly get back together. She has the baby, and presto! End of Juno.
Easy A
Easy A is about a girl, who no one really cares about. She has a conversation with her friend about "having sex" which wasn't real. The religious girl spread the entire rumor around the school. Olive went from a no body to an everybody. She lived with it and follows the rumors instead of cleaning it up. More rumors start to spread. Her friend asked her to have fake sex with him, so he can become popular, more and more rumors went around. She wore an "A" as her sign of rebellion, such as in the Scarlet Letter, however, Hester was forced to wear it. More and more guys asked her to "sleep" with her, but instead of her social life increasing, it decreased. People hated her, she was starting to hate her self. A big rumor that she had an STI got around, but it was actually it was her counselor who slept with a student (who is really like 22). Olive had her secret safe. But things were getting worse for Olive, so she wanted to end this all. No one who she "slept" with wanted to give in, because it already made them popular, so the boy she has liked for years and her came up with a plan. She made a webcast and told everyone the truth.
So...
What is this blog for, trying to compare and contrast Easy A, Juno, and The Scarlet Letter. There are a lot of thematic discussions. Let's focus on what I think was the best of the movies and books. We are talking how they compare to The Scarlet Letter. First lets talk about the "A" symbol in Easy A. Of course this one was obvious, but I don't think it was for Olive. She put it on, but other people in her life were the ones who symbolizes the scarlet A. Such as the counselor who is married to Olive's favorite teacher and is sleeping with the 22 year old boy. In Juno, I absolutely loved the colors, because it was pretty much backwards. You would expect to have Juno, having the brightest color of red. But in fact, it was Bleaker. They were like the Hester and Dimmesdale of the movie. Pauly Bleakers, gold short shorts, and his bright red shirt was like the A on Hester's bosom, but then again like Dimmesdale and his secret he was hiding from the world. Because in Juno, he really didn't want everyone to know that the baby was his. Until like the ending. Juno was more of the settle Hester, not really caring what people were saying, but hurting deep inside.
